WALKTHROUGH - Part 1: The Black Gate

The Murder Investigation Begins

After speaking with Iolo and the mayor, go to the stable and examine everything. Next to the corpse is a key, and the dead Gargoyle's loot is also worth checking. In town, question the shipbuilder Gargan northwest of the stable. Find Christopher's two-story house, speak with his son, open the chest with the key, and take the medallion, money, and scroll. Reading the scroll is important. The blacksmith's son, Spark, can join the party - he's excellent with a sling but has few hit points. After talking to all citizens of Trinsic, go to the mayor, say you want to report, and tell him about the suspects. A password query from the manual follows. The mayor gives you the password for the city gates (Blackbird) and half the reward for Christopher's murderers. Leave through the north gate toward Britain.

In the Castle

Speak with Lord British about the Fellowship. Important: ask about the magic incidents. Lord British tells about Rudyom in Cove, a wizard who lost his memory experimenting with Blackstones. Get the Orb of the Moons from Lord British - this stone lets you teleport across Britannia. Take the key from the study table, then head to the castle corridor. Watch out! A hidden switch leads to the first floor. In the northwest is a storage room opened with the study key - grab weapons, spellbook, and equipment. Tip: The kitchen serves meals twice daily. If you shop for the poor cook, she'll reward you with gold coins.

Completing the Party

Southwest of the castle, west of the museum, is the Fellowship HQ where Batlin resides. Express your wish to join and he'll give you a task: deliver a sealed letter to Elynor in Minoc. Don't open it! Then travel to Jhelom to find Dupre in the pub - he'll gladly join. Tip: To restore peace in Jhelom, have the old fighter near the duel ground sew a flag duplicate. The three fighters will accept it.

The Mysterious Wizard

In Cove, speak with Rudyom about Blackstones and magic. Buy spells and ingredients from him, especially: the four Blackstones and the Transformer (pink wand). Read his notebook first. Take the wand and Blackstones only AFTER speaking with him - stealing leads to jail! Pleasant surprise: you can find a love interest in Cove who gives you a quest.

Moongate Travel

Moongates no longer work properly due to magic problems. They teleport in a circle: 1. Cove/Britain 2. South of Jhelom 3. Yew Forest (near Iolo's hut) 4. East of Minoc 5. Below Trinsic 6. South of New Magincia 7. West of Paws 8. South of Verity Isle.

The Destard Dungeon Treasure

In Minoc, deliver the sealed document to Elynor at the Fellowship branch for your reward. Visit the gypsy fortune-teller northeast. A tunnel above the gypsy camp leads to the Moongate. Return to Britain and visit Batlin again - he sends you to retrieve Fellowship treasure from Dungeon Destard (west of Paws). The Guardian's voice warns you at the entrance. Save before entering! Great for experience points; Headless enemies carry gold bars each.

Joining the Fellowship

Return to Batlin, tell him about the monsters, and ask to join again. He agrees this time. Wait in Britain until 9 PM, go to Fellowship Hall and sit down. Batlin greets everyone. When spoken to, the ceremony begins. Tip: Don't let party members talk you out of joining - it's essential! A manual query from the Fellowship book follows. You receive a Fellowship Medallion - wear it from now on.

Stocking Up

In the pub, find Shamino who has your pocket watch. Sell gems to the jeweler and snake venom elixir to the apothecary for good gold.

The Criminals in Monk's Robes

Head to Yew. Get honey from a valley southeast of Yew or Bee's Cave to the east. Below the cave find Tseramed - his hunting skills and special arrows are very useful. Bring honey to Monk Taylor at Empath Abbey who tells about Wisps and Emps. The monk in the foyer wants you to fetch a Potion of Invisibility from Nikodemus - refuse! In prison, Sir Jack reveals a criminal named Kreg roams in monk's robes. Confront Kreg and defeat him easily.

Visiting the Emps

The Emps live in Silverleaf Trees east of Yew. Beware of bandits and an evil wizard on the way - save first! Speak with Trellek, Saralek, and leader Salomon. To prove goodwill, get woodcutter Ben (west of Yew) to sign a cease-and-desist for cutting Silverleaf Trees. Ben signs willingly. Give it to Salomon. Trellek will build a whistle to summon Wisps. He also reveals the whereabouts of the Cove love interest's father.

The Wisps

Go to the large castle on a mountain in south-central Yew. Use the whistle. A Wisp comes. They'll share info in exchange for Alagner's notebook from New Magincia.

Life or Death

Alagner (north of New Magincia) wants the answer to "Life and Death" from Caine, the "Tortured One" in Skara Brae. Buy the Seance spell from Nikodemus (south of Empath Abbey). Need the "Unlock Magic" spell from Nystul (Lord British's court wizard) to open Nikodemus's door. Reach Skara Brae by ship, ferryman, or flying carpet (found at Dungeon Despise river, southwest of Yew).

The Ghost Town

Use Seance on the ferryman, pay two gold coins. In Skara Brae, speak with all undead. Ask Mordra for formula ingredients. Take three potions from her house to Caine's lab. Place an empty vessel at one end and potions under each pipe. Use the burner to create a potion against the Liche. Get Trent the weaponsmith's music box. At the Liche's tower (northwest), use the music box near his wife to get a ring. Give the ring to Trent, who asks for an iron bar from the graveyard to build a cage.

Freeing Skara Brae

Take the cage to the Well of Souls in the Liche's tower. It should glow blue. Wait until midnight, enter the tower. Use the cage and potion on the Liche - he transforms back to Horance. An undead must sacrifice themselves at the Well of Souls. The mayor eventually volunteers. Ask Caine for the answer: there IS no answer.

New Info

Report to Alagner - he accepts the answer and gives a key. South of his house, find a secret door. Build stairs from crates to reach Alagner's Notebook. Return to the Wisps in Yew with the notebook. They reveal information about the Guardian and the Time Lord, imprisoned at the Shrine of Spirituality. Use the Orb of the Moons northwest.

Dungeon Despise

The sphere is in Dungeon Despise (river southwest of Yew). Pick up the flying carpet at the entrance. Navigate to the teleporter, take the eastern path south, get teleported north, go south taking the southwest fork. Past a magically locked door lies the generator. Destroy the sphere. Use Mark and Recall spells to save yourself the return trip.

The Hourglass and Magic Generator

The Time Lord says use an enchanted hourglass to summon him anytime. Buy the hourglass from the junk dealer in Paws. Have Nikodemus enchant it (Unlock Magic on his door). Back in Despise, destroy the large sphere, go through the red Moongate, solve the puzzle, take the small sphere, and use the hourglass with it.

Freeing Penumbra

The Time Lord tells of a Tetrahedron in a dungeon north of Moonglow controlling the Ether (basis of magic). Go to Penumbra's house in Moonglow. To open the door: hammer, lockpicks, thread (spun wool), ring, and gold. Awaken Penumbra with the Awaken spell. Place four Blackrocks on the four pillars around her bed. She explains: the generator is in Dungeon Deceit. You need the Ethereal Ring, last seen with Lord Draxinosum in Terfin.

The Stone Harpy

In Terfin, tell Lord Draxinosum about the Trinsic murder. He sold the Ethereal Ring to Sultan Martingo on Spektran island (northwest of Terfin). Visit the sultan's castle. Save before opening the door at the end of the great hall - the Guardian speaks. Defeat the Stone Harpy. Take the Ethereal Ring. Have Penumbra enchant it. Enter Dungeon Deceit, fight the big monster, destroy the Tetrahedron, take the small one.

The Mysterious Metal

The Time Lord reveals the third generator is in a dungeon near the Fellowship Meditation Retreat (small island southwest of Serpent's Hold). Visit Brion (northeast of Moonglow) who says you need Caddellite helmets. Find this metal on Ambrosia island (hidden under the compass rose on the map). Watch out for the Hydra! Have Zorn the smith in Minoc forge helmets.

Solving the Puzzle

At the Meditation Retreat, director Ian gives a key but warns against entering the cave. At the generator, leave your party at the blue Moongate and go alone. SAVE! Without the Caddellite helmet you die. Solve the logic puzzle. Take the Cube.

On the Murderer's Trail

The Time Lord says check Buccaneer's Den. Sintag reveals that Hook (one of the Trinsic murderers) lives in a cave behind the House of Games. Sintag gives a key to the locked door in a casino room. Also learn about the Crown Jewel ship sailing to Avatar Isle. Search Hook's rooms for keys - the largest opens the dungeon on Avatar Isle.

The Final Goal

On Avatar Isle, enter the area where the Codex once stood. The dungeon entrance is west of the Codex Hall. Find the Throne of the Guardian. Use the lever behind the curtain in the northwest corner. In the Meeting Room, take the Medallion from the stand, opening doors to the north. In the Room of Changes, sit on the throne three times, then go through the northwest secret passage north. The teleporter brings you to the Black Gate. Kill all Fellowship followers. Place the three generator stones on the matching pedestals in the magic triangle. This breaks the force field. Destroy the Black Gate with Rudyom's wand. The Guardian is stopped from invading Britannia!
